Hold Cleaning – Ensuring Compliance for Sensitive Cargoes
While attending a vessel at the port of Pascagoula, it was discovered that remnants of a previous cement cargo discharge in Houston had caused significant contamination within the cargo holds. Torn cement bags had resulted in widespread spillage, and the material had hardened across the lower sections and side frames of the holds. This presented a serious complication, as the next scheduled cargo was petroleum coke, which required the holds to meet grain-clean standards. Failure to pass inspection at Pascagoula could have resulted in costly delays, off-hire time, or even a charter party cancellation.
Maritech Commercial was engaged to oversee the cleaning operation and ensure compliance with the required standards. Our team quickly mobilized resources, including two manlifts, pressure washing equipment, and a crew of ten specialized cleaners, meeting the vessel at outer anchorage. The situation was further complicated by worsening weather conditions and the limited window remaining before the vessel’s laycan period expired.
Despite these challenges, cleaning operations were executed efficiently and thoroughly. On completion, the vessel underwent inspection, which it passed on the first attempt. The vessel was then able to berth without delay and proceed with loading as scheduled.
By coordinating a timely and effective response, we helped the client avoid potential penalties, maintain their voyage schedule, and protect the commercial terms of the charter. The success of this operation underscores the importance of rapid deployment, technical oversight, and logistical coordination when resolving cargo residue issues between incompatible loadings.
