Tackling Off-Spec Cargo Challenges on Tanker Vessels
A tanker vessel was detained offshore for several days after petroleum cargo loaded via a shore pipeline was found to be off-spec. With operations halted and demurrage costs mounting by the hour, a swift and accurate determination of liability became critical—not only to protect the shipowner from unwarranted claims, but also to minimize disruption to downstream logistics.
We were engaged to investigate the matter, drawing on our extensive experience in resolving off-spec cargo disputes involving petroleum and chemical products. These cases often involve complex interfaces between ship and shore, where contamination may originate at any point in the transfer process. Our objective was clear: conduct a detailed root cause analysis to identify the source of the contamination and present definitive findings.
Upon boarding the vessel, our specialists initiated a structured investigation, collecting targeted samples and overseeing expedited laboratory testing. Through careful data analysis and cross-referencing with loading protocols and shore-side handling records, it became evident that the contamination was introduced prior to loading—originating from the shore terminal, not the vessel.
We compiled and presented our findings to the chartering oil major, supporting each conclusion with objective evidence. The data was accepted without challenge, and the vessel was absolved of any responsibility. A replacement cargo was authorized, and operations resumed shortly thereafter.
By acting quickly and decisively, we helped contain the commercial impact of the dispute, significantly reduced idle time at anchorage, and protected the client from reputational and financial loss. Our ability to coordinate across stakeholders, manage technical investigations, and deliver trusted results played a key role in the timely resolution of the incident. This case exemplifies the value of specialized forensic expertise in maintaining cargo integrity and operational continuity in high-stakes maritime environments.
